WINERY
The Schneider Winery did not start in a garage in 1994, as is often claimed, but in a barn. A small barn in the middle of our village, not far from the church, located on the family’s old farm.
The first few years were tough, but they were rewarded by good vintages. The hard years provided us with the necessary humbleness which we still have to this day, while the good vintages were the building blocks for all further development.
The vineyard area was first expanded to include the best sites in our own Feldmark. Here on the plain, the soils are dominated by gravel and terrace gravel. The hot temperatures prevailing there, combined with the skeleton-rich soils, allow the grapes to ripen to a high physiological level.
Over time, excellent parcels at the foot of the Haardt mountains, our current “mountain vineyards”, were added. There, the vines are spectacularly enthroned on hills and at the edge of the mountains, benefitting from the coolness of the Palatinate Forest and the natural water reservoir. Up here, rocky limestone and coarse colored sand reign supreme.
Shortly after the birth of Nicolaus in 2007, the family moved into the present-day manor house on a small hill above the village. The wine press house, along with the ripening and storage cellars were then built, marking the beginning of a new era. Once again, accompanied by excellent vintages.
Today, we are considered one of the country’s great wine families and look back with satisfaction on what was born from a fixed idea.
