HISTORY

What is home? For 300 years, we in Ellerstadt have been deeply rooted in our vineyards and traditions. That sums up what we mean by home.

In 1725, our ancestor Johann Jakob Schneider, *1706, came to Ellerstadt from Durlach as a travelling journeyman. He fell head over heels in love one evening in the inn and had thus found his new home in the warm, hilly plain east of the Palatinate Forest.

Johann Jakob settled down and made a living as a tailor. On the side, he and his wife Eva tended a modest number of fruit trees and vines. They also made wine from them – but only for their own consumption on the farm.

Many generations later, Klaus Schneider, *1952, turned the small mixed agricultural business into a flourishing fruit farm and gradually increased the area under vines.

Markus Schneider, *1975, was just coming of age when he founded Weingut Schneider in 1994, opening the current chapter in our family history.

‘For most people, home is something that is beyond all reason and cannot be described.’
(Marion Gräfin Dönhoff)
