The grapes for the JOHANNISKREUZ Chardonnay are harvested from our mountain vineyards below the Haardt ridge. Here, they are exposed to the elements on all sides and have been firmly rooted in the dense limestone rock for many years. JOHANNISKREUZ is regarded as the ‘birthplace’ of the Palatinate Forest and lies on a mountain saddle between the Hammertal and Schwarzbach valleys. In this historic location, oak trees aged between 250 and 300 years were felled and crafted in the traditional style of the region. Today, these barrels serve as the ageing vessels for some of the estate’s finest Chardonnay vintages.
